How does eBay fitment work for used auto parts?

eBay now adds vehicles to your listings on its own, but only when a listing has a brand and a part number. That works well for new parts in a box. It works less well for a used OEM part that a yard knows by its interchange number. So the compatibility list your yard system sends is still what decides whether the buyer sees a fit, whether Guaranteed Fit applies, and whether the part comes back.

Before you read on: I’m not affiliated with eBay, and eBay changes these rules often. Everything here was checked on eBay’s own pages on October 28, 2026, and the sources are at the bottom, including the ones eBay wouldn’t show me. My own experience is used OEM wheels, which fit differently from most parts, so I’ve kept to what eBay says for the rest.

What changed, and when

  • February 14, 2023: Guaranteed Fit. eBay started guaranteeing that a part fits when the buyer checks it against their vehicle and the listing shows the green check. If it doesn’t fit, the buyer gets a return within 30 days and eBay pays the return shipping.
  • July 15, 2025: free returns on new parts. Parts and accessories sellers have to offer free 30-day returns on fixed-price listings over $10, but only for items in New or New other condition. Used parts are outside the rule, and so are wheels, tires, engines, transmissions, door and hood panels and airbags.
  • October 20, 2025: Fitment Plus Auto. eBay enrolled US sellers in fitment-enabled categories automatically. If a listing has a brand and a part number, eBay can match vehicles to it and add them to its compatibility.
  • September 30, 2026: myFitment closed. eBay bought myFitment in 2022. Its own help center says the service closed for good on this date and stopped sending fitment to outside tools. Fitment it already put on listings may stay there, but nothing keeps it current.

How Fitment Plus Auto works, and where it stops

You’re already in it unless you opted out. eBay enrolled US sellers in fitment-enabled categories starting October 20, 2025. If a listing has a brand and a part number, eBay matches them against its own vehicle data and adds the vehicles that fit. On listings that already have compatibility, eBay says missing or updated information may be added, and the list is updated regularly from data eBay maintains.

You can turn it off in Motors Selling Preferences, but only for the whole account. eBay says opting out removes every vehicle it added. The UK version, which started September 15, 2026, promises it only adds to your list and never replaces it. The US page doesn’t say that either way, so check a few listings after it runs.

Where it stops is the used part. A new aftermarket part has a brand and a part number printed on the box. A used OEM part often has a number that’s worn, painted over or never put on that piece at all, and the yard knows it by its interchange number instead. An interchange number tells you which other vehicles took the same part. It’s exactly the information eBay wants, but in a form Fitment Plus Auto doesn’t read. Someone has to turn it into compatibility rows.

How compatibility lists work

Every row in a compatibility list is a vehicle from eBay’s Master Vehicle List: year, make, model, trim and engine. eBay asks for at least year, make and model. If a vehicle is missing from the list, eBay takes requests to add it.

There are four ways rows get onto a listing:

  • By hand, picking vehicles one at a time in the listing form.
  • From eBay’s parts catalog, by brand, part number or barcode, where the vehicles come prefilled and update on their own. That’s built for new parts with catalog numbers.
  • In bulk, through Seller Hub Reports (what used to be File Exchange), with the vehicles in the Relationship columns of the upload file.
  • Through the API, which is how yard systems and listing tools send them.

One listing can carry up to 1,000 or 3,000 vehicles, depending on the category, and eBay cuts off anything past the limit. A part that fits more than that needs to be split across listings.

eBay puts accuracy on the seller. Its Parts Sales Hub says you’re responsible for the compatible vehicles you list, and its salvage page says clear detail on condition and part number cuts down on returns.

Why wrong fitment costs you

Guaranteed Fit. When a buyer checks a part against their vehicle and your listing shows the green check, eBay guarantees it fits. If it doesn’t, the buyer can return it within 30 days, eBay covers the return label where it can, and the buyer gets a full refund. eBay says it covers most new and pre-owned parts, as long as the listing has compatibility information. Tires and wheels are excluded, and so are universal and customized parts. eBay also says you have to resolve a “doesn’t fit” return even if your listing says no returns.

So the list is the promise. A buyer who trusted your compatibility list and got the wrong part is getting a refund either way. The green check is something your data said, not something the buyer guessed.

Who pays the label. eBay’s parts return policy says it covers the label on fit returns under Guaranteed Fit, and that on a return for an item not as described, the seller pays the full label. eBay’s US pages I could read don’t say whether a “doesn’t fit” return on a listing with wrong vehicles counts as not as described, so I won’t tell you it does.

Your rating. eBay’s service metrics policy says a very high not-as-described return rate may mean higher final value fees. And a return that sits until the buyer escalates and closes without your resolution is a defect, which is how accounts end up Below Standard.

Used parts and free returns. The free 30-day returns rule from July 2025 only covers parts in New or New other condition. Your used parts can carry your own return policy. Guaranteed Fit still applies to them.

The item specifics that matter

FieldWhy it matters on a used part
BrandFitment Plus Auto can’t match without it. For a used OEM part that usually means the automaker, though eBay doesn’t spell that out for used parts. It’s implied by how the matching works.
Manufacturer Part NumbereBay’s own advice is to include it. It’s the other half of the brand and part number match. If the OEM number is on the part, use it.
“Does not apply”Only for a part that really has no number. eBay’s item description policy treats “Does not apply” as a violation when the manufacturer gave the item an identifier.
Interchange Part NumberIf your category offers it, fill it. eBay’s pages don’t say it drives the vehicle matching, so treat it as help for buyers searching by number, not as fitment.
TitleeBay suggests brand, part type, part number, the equivalent OEM part number, part name and material. A buyer who searches by part number needs to find it there.
ConditioneBay’s salvage page asks for condition, part number, mileage where it applies, and visible wear. It says that kind of detail cuts down on disputes and returns.

Wheels and tires work differently. eBay’s Parts Sales Hub says they’re matched on details about the part itself, like a tire’s width, aspect ratio and rim diameter, and they’re outside Guaranteed Fit. That’s the world I listed in for fourteen years, and it’s why I don’t assume a wheel rule carries over to a door or an alternator.

Automaker names describe fit, not who you are

You can’t list a used part without naming the make it came off. The trouble starts when the wording reads like you’re the brand or its dealer. Automakers can report a listing through eBay’s VeRO program, for verified rights owners. eBay then takes it down with a notice. Repeat reports can lead to selling restrictions or a suspension.

eBay’s Seller Center says to put “compatible with”, “fits” or “for” in front of a brand name when you’re describing fit. For a part that fits a few makes, use one brand in the title and list the rest in the description. I’m not a lawyer, so for anything past the wording, ask one.

In July 2017 Nissan reported 18 of our Infiniti wheel listings at AllOEMRims through VeRO, and eBay pulled them all. They read “Up for sale is a used OEM rim for a 2014 Infiniti Q50.” Within a couple of weeks every listing said the wheel “fits and is compatible with a” before each make and model.

How yard systems and listing tools fill fitment

This is the part that decides how good your compatibility lists are, and it happens before eBay sees the listing.

  • Checkmate Listing Manager translates interchange numbers, including Car-Part’s own Interchange Plus, into eBay fitment.
  • WHI Nexpart eBay Link maps each part to vehicle fitments and eBay categories, and URG members can use it with Powerlink or Pinnacle.
  • Hollander eLink lists from Powerlink. Hollander doesn’t publish how it builds compatibility, so ask your rep how interchange becomes eBay vehicles and what happens past the per-listing limit.
  • eBay-first subscriptions like Salvage Logix carry a donor vehicle’s details over to every part pulled from it.

eBay’s own Parts Sales Hub still points sellers to myFitment for bulk fitment updates. myFitment closed on September 30, 2026, so if that was your route, you need a new one. For a side-by-side of the yard systems themselves, see Powerlink, Checkmate or Pinnacle, and for the listing tools, the eBay listing options for recyclers.

A checklist for this month

  1. Open Motors Selling Preferences and confirm whether Fitment Plus Auto is on for your account. It’s account-wide, and turning it off removes the fitment it added.
  2. Pull ten live listings and check each one for a brand and a part number. Those two are what Fitment Plus Auto matches on.
  3. Check that no listing says “Does not apply” where the part has a readable number.
  4. Open the compatibility table on five of them and compare it to what your interchange says. Look for missing years, extra trims and wrong engines.
  5. If you used myFitment or a tool that depended on it, find out where your compatibility comes from now.
  6. Ask your yard system vendor how its eBay bridge turns interchange into compatibility rows, and how it handles a part that fits more vehicles than eBay allows on one listing.
  7. Read your last month of “doesn’t fit” returns. Each one is either a listing with the wrong vehicles or a buyer who didn’t check, and the fix is different.
  8. Watch your service metrics in Seller Hub. A high rate of not-as-described returns can raise your fees, and a return that turns into a case closed without your resolution is a defect.

If you’d rather have someone else look, I’ll audit 10 to 20 of your listings for free, by email with no call, and fitment is one of the five things I score.

Where I come in. I build the piece between your interchange data and eBay, so a part’s number turns into a full compatibility list without anyone retyping it. From 2012 to 2026 I did that at AllOEMRims, where I ran the eBay side and built the system behind it: type the part number, and the interchange, size and fitment fill in.

Straight answers

Does eBay Fitment Plus Auto work on used parts?

It works on any listing in a fitment-enabled category that has a brand and a part number. Used OEM parts often have an automaker brand and an OEM number, which it can match. Parts identified only by an interchange number are the hard case, so the fitment from your yard system still matters.

Can I turn off Fitment Plus Auto?

Yes, in Motors Selling Preferences, for the whole account. eBay says opting out removes any fitment Fitment Plus Auto added, and you can opt back in later.

Does eBay Guaranteed Fit cover used parts?

eBay says it covers most new and pre-owned parts and accessories, as long as the listing has compatibility information and the buyer’s vehicle shows a fit. Tires and wheels are excluded, and so are universal and customized parts.

Do used auto parts have to offer free returns on eBay?

Not under the July 2025 rule. It covers fixed-price listings over $10 in New or New other condition. Used parts can set their own return policy, but eBay still expects sellers to resolve “doesn’t fit” returns on Guaranteed Fit purchases.

How many vehicles can one eBay listing fit?

Up to 1,000 or 3,000, depending on the category. eBay’s developer documentation says to check the limit for your category, and anything past it gets cut off.

What happened to myFitment?

eBay bought it in 2022. Its help center says it closed for good on September 30, 2026 and stopped sending fitment to other tools. eBay’s own Fitment Plus Auto now does the matching on eBay.
